White House will release homebrew recipe if 25,000 sign petition

White House Honey Ale

The White House microbrewing project was first reported back in 2011 when President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama served homebrewed White House Honey Ale at their Super Bowl party. One year later, a beer-drinking Obama and his White House homebrew continue to make headlines after the President reportedly told a man in Iowa that his bus was stocked with White House brewed beer earlier this month.

Homebrewers and beer enthusiasts have since asked the White House to release the recipe for the beer. One hopeful Redditor even submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the recipe. But because the White House is exempt from the FOIA, the request was denied. Wamp, wamp.

Even so, a recent petition to "[r]elease the recipe for the Honey Ale home brewed at the White House" has kept the hope alive for curious beer lovers. Last Thurs., Press Secretary Jay Carney tweeted that if the petition reached its required 25,000 signatures by Sept. 17, 2012, the recipe would be released. At the time of this writing the petition has 9,191 signatures — 15,809 to go.

The petition reads:

Following in the footsteps of great men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, Barack Obama has reportedly been enjoying the rewards of home brewed beer. Recent reports from news outlets like the Washington Post (August 15th, 2012) have stated that Obama has been drinking a White House home brew Honey Ale while on the campaign trail.

In keeping with the brewing traditions of the founding fathers, homebrewers across America call on the Obama Administration to release the recipe for the White House home brew so that it may be enjoyed by all.

"I think it’s time for beer” -Franklin D. Roosevelt (March 12, 1933)

So far, at least three styles have been reported: a White House Honey Ale (made with honey from the First Lady’s beehive), a White House Honey Blonde and Honey Porter.
