Update on the Shed at Glenwood...and more

Pork belly at the Shed
Like most every Wednesday night for three-plus years, we hit the Shed at Glenwood for its $3 slider night this week. While there, we ran into Christianne Lauterbach, editor-publisher of Knife & Fork and a critic at Atlanta Magazine. She had just returned from Ireland. I'm guessing she was there to check out the cooking of the new chef, Todd Richards.

I've been trying some of the new menu items instead of always eating my usual trio of sliders. One was a plate of crispy pork belly with turnips (some sliced, some pureed) and pickled blackberries. I found it a mixed success. The pork itself was about perfect, but I didn't care for the blackberries, whose taste resembled spiced peaches. That's not a flavor I like, but I'm aware I'm likely in a minority. The hoisin sauce on the plate boosted the sweetness, while the turnips provided a note of needed, if slight, bitterness.

Smoked ham and grilled peaches at the Shed
I've also sampled a plate of smoked ham with grilled peaches, sliced parmesan and some balsamic vinegar. I liked that very much. Richards has added a dessert of zucchini bread — it resembles banana bread — with a scoop of awesome ginger ice cream.

Meanwhile, the slider menu hasn't changed much during the last few weeks. Owner Cindy Shera told me Richards is taking things "one step at a time," but will begin mixing up the slider menu next week....

LESS SUGAR, PLEASE: I lunched with my old friend Zippy this week at Little Bangkok, long my favorite Thai spot in the city. (Don't bother with the Chinese side of the menu.)

Zippy, who lives in Seattle, shares my addiction to green curry, which we both ordered. To my surprise, it had a strong, cloyingly sweet note. And a complimentary cup of sweet-and-sour soup could have been a Chinese alternative to Southern swee'tea....

WHEN RED BULL RUNS IN THE BLOOD: Wow. Who knew Red Bull, the energy drink, could make you this jittery?....

HURRY: I can't wait for Bell Street Burritos to open at Irwin Street Market. It lost the lease on its Westside location. The original, at Sweet Auburn Curb Market, remains open, but the market closes too early for dinner. It's scary to think that I will soon be able to load up on shrimp burritos and walk a few steps to eat Jake's ice cream....
