Foodies, snack junkies, dessert lovers, and anyone who eats food really, National Food Day is just around the corner!
Food Day "is a nationwide celebration and a movement toward more healthy, affordable, and sustainable food." People from all over the country gather to discuss issues such as "health and nutrition, hunger, agricultural policy, animal welfare, and farm worker justice."
One of the main initiatives of Food Day is transforming the American diet. Filled with high salt, high fat content, the American diet is in dire need of a healthy alternative. Food Day hopes to bring awareness to this major issue and offer options for a healthier diet so we can avoid obesity, hearth disease, and other diet induced conditions.
In celebration of Food Day, events are being held all over the country. Here are some of the ones happening around Atlanta:
Trees Atlanta Wed., Oct. 24, 6-10 p.m. Organic Wine & Food Fair. Guests enjoy a complimentary tasting of artisan wines from around the globe (many from organically grown grapes) and live entertainment they’ll also have the opportunity to shop at the local “green” pop-up market and savor delicious fare. Emory University Wed., Oct. 24 Emory University 100 Mile Meal. Emory Dining chefs will source all ingredients for this delicious meal from within 100 miles of Emory University, highlighting the bounty of the local food system. Details
Decatur Organic Farmers Market Wed., Oct. 24, 4-7 p.m. Food Day Eat-In. Celebrate Food Day by shopping at the Decatur Farmers Market. Grab some delicious picnic food and walk across the street to our Food Day Eat-In outside of the First Baptist Church and enjoy your fresh, local food with fellow Food Day supporters. Local musicians will provide entertainment. Details
