Omnivore - News flash: kids fail to squall

Children defy their own stereotype

You might remember the brouhaha over kids in restaurants that exploded last February after I wrote a post about Grant Central Pizza’s request that parents take their squalling children outside to calm them down. The issue turned into a literally international subject of debate.

Well, this was the scene at Dakota Blue, across the street from Grant Central, last Saturday during brunch: two tables full of parents and their uncountable number of children. There were more inside. Nobody went berserk. Actually, the next day, I grabbed a quick meal at Grant Central and it too was packed with children. Nobody went berserk. And I did some writing at Grant Park Coffeehouse and watched kids fencing with popsicles. Same deal.

It makes me wonder if kids’ misbehaving in restaurants is as big a problem that people claim. Of course, it only takes one squaller to disrupt a dining room.
