Food & Life Spelman to establish food studies program

He's received a grant to help establish a "food studies minor" at the college. Inter-disciplinary, it will include faculty from other departments relating food to their own fields of study. There's a well-established trend toward creating such programs around the nation:
This new academic field, taking shape in an expanding number of colleges and universities, coordinates the food-related instruction sprinkled throughout academia in recognition that food is not just relevant, but critical to dozens of disciplines. It's agriculture; it's business; it's health; it's the economy; it's the environment; it's international relations; it's war and peace.
And, attention, Asha Gomez of Cardamom Hill: the current issue's (free) online section includes an interview with Praveen Anand, chef at Dakshin. He is considered by many to be the world's expert in the cooking of South India, including Kerala.
All of that said, the journal is about to take a turn that doesn't sound particularly positive. The founding editor, Darra Goldstein, has announced she is stepping down after 12 years, as are two other staffers because of an apparent decision by the University of California to cut back production costs and move the publication in a more purely academic direction. But that's not altogether clear.
