Omnivore - Discover urban agriculture on the Grant Park Urban Homestead Bicycle Tour

Explore intown Atlanta’s environmental programs and local landmarks on this seven-mile tour.

On Sunday, June 8, bicycle-riding environmentalists will meet at Grant Park Farmers Market at 10 a.m. to kick off the Grant Park Urban Homestead Bicycle Tour. During the tour, cyclists will explore intown Atlanta’s environmental programs and local landmarks. After a quick breakfast (riders will receive $5 worth of market tokens for snacks), the tour will run from 10:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m.

Of the many tour stops on the seven-mile ride, riders will see Concrete Jungle at Grant Park Planting, a nonprofit that aims to pick and donate wild produce foraged from the Atlanta area to homeless shelters and food banks. At another stop, the folks at Freewheel Farm will educate riders on the practice of small-scale organic urban farming. Along the way bike riders will visit the Social Goat Bed and Breakfast, which maintains a small petting farm on the property. Bike riders will also visit Compostwheels, a recycling and waste management company, which allows people living in apartment communities or those without the ability to compost to join the composting revolution.

Other stops include visiting the home of Danielle Hanson, the Tapestry Garden, Bioponica, an alternative farming technique that cuts out soil entirely, Cabbagetown Coop, a preschool that values community and a high quality education for families who are a part of the rebuilding of Atlanta’s in-town neighborhoods, Urban Farm in Ormewood, and the Grant Park Community Garden.

Tickets are available through Brown Paper Tickets and $20 bike rentals are available from Bicycle Tours of Atlanta. Snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the tour, and all proceeds benefit Wholesome Wave Georgia.
