Makan opened Thursday, July 24 in downtown Decatur, making its debut within the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel at 130 Clairemont Ave. The restaurant, designed by Square Feet Studio, features cuisines in the Hong Kong, Taiwanese, and Korean traditions, including ramen, Taiwanese beef noodle soup, and housemade dumplings.
In case you missed it, Asha Gomez's flagship Westside Cardamom Hill is closing on Monday, July 28, after a two-and-a-half-year run. Moving forward, the chef will now focus on two new concepts: "Indian patisserie” Spice to Table, which opens August 1, and a fried chicken stand called Spice Road Chicken set to open in Krog Street Market later this year.
Fado Irish Pub will add a Midtown location to its roster, filling the vacancy left by La Tagliatella when it closed in March. Founding partner Kieran McGill said in a statement that they had been hunting for the ideal Midtown location for a long time, and found the perfect solution in the 933 Peachtree St. space. The new pub is slated to open in early 2015.
Chef Todd Richards' new restaurant, the Pig & The Pearl, should open by Monday, July 28, at 1380 Atlantic Drive. The "chef-driven smokehouse and raw bar" will specialize in meats such as brisket, pork shoulder, lamb, duck, and wild game, and also offer raw and smoked seafood, Southern-style sides, and a full bar with craft cocktails, craft beers, and wines.
Speaking of Atlantic Station, Ron Eyester's Diner is expected to make its debut by early August in the former Geisha House space at 1380 Atlantic Drive. For now, we have signage, and the promise of a smorgasbord of culinary offerings that will follow no true rhyme or reason. After all, Eyester insists, you'll be able to order pretty much anything you want.
After three months on the job, Craig Richards has been promoted from chef de cuisine to executive chef of St. Cecilia, replacing Drew Belline in the role. Belline, meanwhile, maintains his post as the Creative Director of Ford Fry's Rocket Farm Restaurants.
Retired army colonel Andre Tyler has filed plans to open Meiko's International Tapas Bar & Lounge in Castleberry Hill. Taking its moniker from the owner's high school nickname, the restaurant will offer a broad swath of worldly cuisines like "shepherd’s pie, cuban sandwiches, and caramelized scallops." Around $165,000 is being spent to transform the space at 110 Centennial Olympic Park Drive into an upscale environment complete with a striking two-story bar.
A new barbecue joint, K&D's, has opened in Old Fourth Ward. The clandestine eatery currently operates out of a blue house at 272 Glen Iris Drive, Thursdays through Saturdays. The cash-only operation is reportedly run by the two sisters who inspired its name and offers a laundry list of classic items such as ribs, chili slaw dogs, hushpuppies, fish sandwiches, cheeseburgers, and Polish sausages.
Top Flr and Sound Table co-founder Jeff Myers plans to open a new restaurant in Decatur by September. Though it has yet to be named, the forthcoming restaurant at 2233 College Avenue will be both affordable and chef-driven, Myers says. Offering just 21 seats (counting the patio), it will serve lunch and dinner, but no alcoholic beverages. Former Top Flr chef Travis Carroll will oversee the cuisine.
