James Hammerl, proprietor of the popular Doggy Dogg weiner carts, has a brick-and-mortar hot dog joint in the works. Hammerl tells Creative Loafing that after touring Atlanta with his decked out wiener carts for the last four years, he is planning to open the first-ever stationary Doggy Dogg outpost in the former home of shuttered Peruvian chicken rotisserie Las Brasas (310 E. Howard Ave.) in Decatur. (Las Brasas, is in the process of relocating to 614 Church St. and hopes to open in July.) Meanwhile, Hammerl’s hot dog carts will continue to make their farmers market appearances. Projected opening is June.

Virginia-Highland’s burger-centric Illegal Food begins brunch service this Sun., May 31 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The restaurant’s infamous burger, the Hank, will, of course, be on the menu. Other, more brunch-y items include quail and waffles, fancy French toast, and Kentucky Hot Brown with maple and sage turkey breast, mornay sauce, bacon, and more. As for booze, expect concoctions such as chef Steven Lingenfelter’s “Bloody Mary, with 30-plus ingredients, and the Caucasian (a riff on a White Russian), with house-made Kahlua.”


MF Sushi Atlanta will open soon in Inman Park, in the Inman Quarter development, according to owner Alex Kinjo. Kinjo tells Creative Loafing that Mon., June 1 is the day and that he hopes to launch. Kinjo says he is working hard to give Atlanta the best of the experiences of MF Sushi Midtown and MF Buckhead.

Atlanta’s latest farmer’s market, the Westside Farmers Market at Westside Provisions District, got off to a busy, busy start on May 17. Located on the side street between the WSPD parking deck and Yeah Burger, the inaugural event’s 20 vendors welcomed an estimated 1,500 visitors to what the event’s umbrella organization, Community Farmers Markets. The Westside Provisions District Farmers Market is open Sundays through Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Buckhead Life Italian restaurant Veni Vidi Vici is preparing to pack it in, says Eater. The restaurant, which first opened in 1993, will open for dinner one last time this Sun., May 31.

Earlier this week, East Lake Foundation and CF Foundation Inc. reported Fellini’s and La Fonda owners Mike Nelson and Clay Harper with partners Jay Martin and Nathan Bolster bought the land at the four corners and plan “multiple restaurant concepts’ on the sites. This includes converting an old gas station on the northwest corner into the Greater Good BBQ, a fast-casual family-friendly restaurant. The restaurants will be located less than a mile from the prestigious East Lake Golf Club.

Porsche, who has just opened its new Experience Center and HQ in in the northeast corner of, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, is also adding fine dining to the list of world class amenities offered by the $100 million facility. Now, ifyou get hungry while checking out all things Porsche, you can drop into the restaurant at the Experience Center called Restaurant 356 (named for the first production model Porsche).

Flats, featuring “handcrafted flatbreads, paninis and salads as well as artisan juices, is planning a 1,200 square foot spot in the former Subway space at the intersection of Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Marietta Street, in late summer/ early fall, according to Tomorrow’s News Today.

Atlanta-based Arby’s plans to open the first prototype of its newest concept store in downtown Atlanta by “late 2015”, says What Now, Atlanta. The quick-service sandwich chain will open its 2,600-square-foot prototype “urban inline” store in 34 Park Tower on the ground floor facing Broad Street.

In case you missed it, City Winery, a New York-based concept that artfully combines a fully functioning winery and music venue with fine dining is slated to open at Ponce City Market. According to company sources City Winery, which already has combination winery/restaurant/music venues in New York, Chicago, Napa and Nashville, will open in Atlanta by September November 2015. Expect wine classes, private events in a variety of configurations, and fine dining in addition to the winery.
