Gravy Train: Chef-tastic ice cream from High Road, Sweeney to Cakes & Ale

High Road Craft is launching their first chef collaboration that’s available in stores - a Peanut Butter Pretzel creation from Ron Eyester (better known as The Angry Chef). The pints, along with other High Road flavors, are available at Whole Foods (Eyester's flavor debuts September 1). The local ice cream company also has flavors in the works from Shaun Doty and Matt Swickerath. Looks like Kevin Gillespie isn’t the only chef making his mark in frozen treats.

Cakes & Ale formally announced David Sweeney’s role at the new location, which will be to lead lunch at The Bakery portion of the restaurant. The Bakery is described as having its own identity and offering a casual, comfortable place for the pastry chefs to showcase their talents. The lunch menu will go beyond pastries, offering sandwiches, soups, and salads made with local ingredients.

Open Table released their Diner’s Choice list of top restaurants for late night dining, and a few Atlanta spots made the cut. Cafe Circa, HOBNOB, Loca Luna and Shout were all included in the nationwide list.

Secret fig cook and more

Posted by on Thu, Jul 28, 2011 at 10:31 AM

Giant among figs

Guess whose fig preserves I'm eating. Lance Gummere, chef of the Shed at Glenwood, handed me a jar of them last night (yeah, he recognizes me) with the explanation that he'd made them with Meridith Ford Goldman, former dining critic at the AJC.

It seems Gummere ordered 20 lbs. of figs that, thanks to the rain, split open, making them unsuitable for dinnerplate presentation, but fine for preserves. Goldman offered her help and labored in the kitchen until midnight. She did a good job.

In related news, Gummere sent me the accompanying photo of the giant fig that entered his kitchen....

About a zillion people have asked me what's going on with the old San Francisco Coffee location on North Highland south of Ponce. It's Richard Blais' Haute Doggery, of course. Alas, the bistro de les hot dogs is not opening in August, after all. Sometime...in...the...fall....

James Oxendine has an interview in Atlanta Magazine's "Covered Dish" blog with Marc Taft, owner of the new Chicken and the Egg in Marietta. Taft was formerly manager of Pacci and has hired several former fellow employees, including executive chef Joseph Ramaglia.

The new restaurant's promotional material promises "modern farmstead fare." I wish Oxendine had asked Taft about his inspiration to do that. I know it's a fad and I think it's commendable that chefs have turned to organic, sustainable, local, transcendentally gustatory ingredients, but, as Jason Hill of Wisteria told me recently, there's so much pressure to subscribe to the movement that it's not unusual for restaurants to lie about their sourcing....

Popeyes is moving its headquarters to Dunwoody, reports the twittering AJC. That means Popeyes will be the AJC's neighbor, since our "city newspaper" moved there itself last year. Meow.

Rumor: Cumberland Island's Whitney Otawka to appear on next season of 'Top Chef?'

Posted by on Wed, Jul 27, 2011 at 1:37 PM

Hey, remember in December when I said a young chef named Whitney Otawka who works at Cumberland Island's Greyfield Inn was a chef to watch? Turns out I may have been right. Rumors around town are that Otawka, who has worked under Hugh Acheson and Linton Hopkins, is a contestant on the new season of "Top Chef," which Eater recently reported is filming in Texas. Eater has some speculation about other contestants for the new season as well.

I have eaten this woman's food and she's the real deal, at least in the kitchen if not on the grand stage of reality television. Here's hoping the rumors are true.

Watershed to open new restaurant?

News Flash: I've heard on good authority that Watershed's owners have been scouting locations for a new restaurant. The rumor is that chef Joe Truex will head the kitchen, thus no longer having to work in the shadow of Scott Peacock, longtime former chef of Watershed.

I hope this happens for real, since I would love to see Truex bring back the cooking which made his defunct restaurant, Repast, one of my favorites in the city.

Great news...if it's true

Posted by on Fri, Jun 17, 2011 at 1:56 AM

OK, here's some serious gossip. I haven't managed to confirm it entirely, so I'm not going to name names at this point. However...

I have learned through the magical web of restaurant real estate gossip that one of our city's very best chefs is leaving his current job to open his own place in Atlantic Station, apparently in the space vacated by American Eagle.

One hint: He cooks Italian. Another hint: I'll kick his ass if he leaves town.

Sliders and gossip at the Shed

We did our usual slider feast at the Shed at Glenwood last night. Owner Cindy Shera reported a wave of chef visits, including Stuart Baesel of Community Q, Kevin Gillespie of Woodfire Grill and Robert Phalen of Holy Taco and the new One Eared Stag, which opened yesterday for lunch.

While we were dining, David Sweeney, our city's unparalleled vegetarian chef, stopped by too. Sweeney has worked for Restaurant Eugene since closing Dynamic Dish. I told him I thought it was time for him to open another restaurant and he looked momentarily dazed. "I'm still recovering from the first one," he said.

The only chef who was missing was Riccardo Ullio, whose new restaurant, Escorpion Tequila Bar and Cantina, is scheduled to open this evening.

Chef Lance Gummere was on his game last night, concocting $3 sliders of duck pot pie, barbacoa chicken, chilled beef heart, pork belly and lots more.

CORRECTION: It turns out that Escorpion is not opening tonight. The opening has been delayed until next week, Monday at the earliest.

Gravy Train: Blais' hot dog concept called HD10...maybe, Top FLR crew to open Midtown concept

Posted by on Fri, Apr 15, 2011 at 3:26 PM

Silk
Based on permits filed by the Holy Taco folks, it’s looking like the working name for the new restaurant moving into the Shaun’s location in Inman Park is One Eared Stag.

In other permitting news, we’re seeing the name HD10 associated with the old San Francisco Coffee location in Poncey-Highland that’s said to be home to Richard Blais’ new hot dog concept (HD... hot dog... not a far stretch if you ask us). We'd love to tell you more, but at this time, Blais’ representation was not able to comment on the progress of the new restaurant.

The crew behind Top FLR and Sound Table will be opening a new concept in Midtown, though details are still under wraps. The space is expected to open sometime this summer in the former Cuerno/Lupe Taqueria space on Juniper. Shane Devereux will act as the executive chef.

Gravy Train: Thumbs Up opens a BBQ restaurant, Fifth Group's new concept

Posted by on Fri, Apr 8, 2011 at 11:50 AM

  • Will fans of Twain's brews be allowed to take beer to-go?
The folks who brought you Thumbs Up Diner have now opened Thumbs Up Smokehouse right next door to the diner on Edgewood. The operation is currently open from 11 a.m - 5 p.m. and is cash only.

Fifth Group will be bringing a new concept to the shuttered Vickery’s location on Crescent Avenue in Midtown. Announced via Twitter, they are unsure of what the restaurant will be at this time, but they are toying with a few different ideas. This will be the seventh Atlanta location for Fifth Group, after their new Mexican concept opens Downtown.

Stevie Wonder was in town for an event yesterday and dined at Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, even jumping on stage to join the band in a few songs.

Paul Luna scoping Capitol View for new venture

Chef Paul Luna (of Lunacy Black Market) has been investigating a property in the Capitol View area for a new restaurant. The project is in the early stages, with Luna soliciting community involvement and feedback to gauge the neighborhood's readiness.

In late February, Luna held two community meetings in the proposed Capitol View location at the corner of Dill and Hartford. The chef invited residents to share what they are looking for in a new establishment and also ask any questions about the project. The meetings are being paired with an online survey asking people everything from what types of meat they prefer to where they shop and if they belong to a CSA.

Your new one-stop pig-out place

Posted by on Thu, Feb 24, 2011 at 5:04 PM

Here's some disconcerting news. Ansley Mall will soon be home to a Five Guys Burgers and Fries, a Panera Bread and a California Pizza Kitchen.

They will join Starbucks, Moe's, the Cheesesteak Place and the new Planet Living yogurt and juice bar.

In other words, the mall is turning into a gigantic food court. Oh well, it means more obesity for LA Fitness to combat.
