This photo was taken by Kent Osborne, an L.A. wit in town for an IMAGE screenplay workshop. It was posted on his blog.
If you want more quality laughs, check out Osborneâs blog.
Osborne is a Mumblecore actor/screenwriter (Hannah Takes the Stairs) and former âSpongeBob SquarePantsâ writer, and thus, built for hilarity.
His oh-so-right contrast of ATL banality and hip-hop made me do a spit-take. Thatâs IMAGE festival director Dan Krovich on Osborne's website demonstrating a standing backflip. Totally fierce.
Osborne's photo of Mr. Squared Away on the Segway generated so many questions.
Is this outfit for real, or Wes Andersonesque tongue-in-cheek?Because he is Segwaying his nattily-dressed self down a particularly hairy, drug-infested strip of Boulevard looking like a tourist from Des Moines with a $2000 Nikon around his neck and a map in his hand.
Also, deeper, profounder questions come to mind:
Is it humanly possible to ride a Segway and not look like a grade-A doofus?
What is the safety helmet for? The Segway matches a duckâs waddle at top speed.
If this Segway-riding through an urban armpit is meant ironically as a statement about Atlanta gentrification, then my hatâs off to Mr. Segway. You rarely see this kind of wafer-thin, subtle performance art in our neck of the woods.
I am frightened to contemplate the alternative.
