The 19th-century national pastime of horse racing and the "peculiar institution" of slavery run neck and neck in Carlyle Brown's PURE CONFIDENCE (pictured), continuing at Theatrical Outfit Fri., MARCH 7. A winning, enslaved jockey (Eugene H. Russell IV) calculates that enough victories will enable him to buy his freedom from his owner (James Donadio), but complications such as the Civil War threaten his bid for liberty. Gary Yates, who also just directed Blue Door at Theatre in the Square, directs this historical drama, which includes Marianne Fraulo, Scott E. DePoy and Jade Lambert-Smith. Through March 30. $25. Wed.-Sat., 7:30 p.m.; Sun., 2:30 p.m. The Balzer Theater at Herren's, 84 Luckie St. 678-528-1500. www.theatricaloutfit.org.
