I reviewed Frank Darabont's adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist (featuring Atlanta actors Brandon O'Dell and Tiffany Morgan) back in November. Later, on December 2, on my other blog, I wrote in a little more detail about the film's conclusion and how it reverses the ending of King's novella.
So this morning (April 9) I discover that a stranger just added a comment to the Dec. 12 post about how he's putting together a "fan edit" of The Mist to make it more like the original text. The whole concept of the fan edit, like the Jar-Jar-diminishing cut of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, is a neat little phenomenon that raises interesting questions about how ownership and new interpretations of pop culture works. (Note to self: track down and watch The Phantom Edit, since my kid's interested in the movie.)
Anyway, the ending (in progress?) of The Mist: The Novella Cut is on-line, using bits of King's text to "set the record straight." What's interesting is that the final montage manages to be both visually beautiful and arguably more bleak than either the book's final lines and the twist in Darabont's film. A spoiler warning should go without saying:

Greetings! Thanks for the kind words regarding my fan edit of 'The Mist'...;) Just to let you know, the YouTube version was taken down...so I now have a page online devoted to the project (http://www.karcreat.com/MistNovellaCut.html)...it features information on the edits being done, new sequences being added, and downloadable sections for people to watch and give feedback on. The fan edit is actually complete, I am having a friend (with access to professional editing programs) assemble all the seperate clips, and when its ready to download, the news will be posted on the aforementioned site. Again, thanks for your input and opinions! K
