The imminent demise of alt-country bimonthly bible No Depression makes the stark imagery of disappearing Americana heard throughout SON VOLT's fifth album, The Search, all the more poignant. The group graced the cover of the very first issue of ND in August '95; since then, both have served as country music institutions. The group's principal songwriter, Jay Farrar, revels in the traditions of downbeat Americana, and with The Search he vents his frustration over the changing American landscape with more passion than Son Volt has captured in years. Bobby Bare Jr. opens the Fri., APRIL 11, show with a blend of post-punk melodies and long washes of psychedelic country heart. $20-$22.50. 8:30 p.m. Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave. 404-524-7354.
