Wrapping up the final week of its CINEMAMA!!! film series, New Street Gallery consummates April's "Identity" theme with a screening of The Double Life of Veronique Thurs., APRIL 24, replete with popcorn, beverages and lounging pillows. Shot half in French and half in Polish, filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski's ethereal, Palme d'Or-nominated 1991 film explores the geographically distant yet uncannily, perhaps subconsciously, connected lives of Frenchwoman Veronique and Pole Veronika. Echoing Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theories of the doppelganger, or double, to follow the lives of the two physically remote women â both played by French actress Irène Jacob, who garnered a Cannes Film Festival Best Actress award for her portrayal â Kieslowski turns the camera's critical eye on notions of free will, existential crises and destiny. Free. 8 p.m. New Street Gallery, 2800 Washington St., Avondale Estates. 404-298-8696. cinemama.org.
