Mudfish strikes back with ‘SWAT SWAT’ 01

‘SWAT SWAT’ picks up where ‘Breaking Bad’ left off with bit more spontaneity.

Image It’s been about a year since DJ Mudfish laid to rest his monthly Breaking Bad mixtape series with the arrival of BBAD #48. This month saw the launch of a brand new series, dubbed SWAT SWAT, which picks up right where he left off, but with a bit more spontaneity to the overall presentation. The most notable difference in approach is that the mix was done live, on the spot, stamped-in, and done. No studio time was employed here, no tags, and no shout outs for upcoming shows. It’s a straight mix of a handful of recent cuts, tied together with a loose theme of Atlanta hip-hop production: Kato of SMKA worked on the third track, King Holiday’s “Hard Not to Kill.” DJ Burn One produced the Scotty ATL ft. Killer Mike and Trouble number, “Pray Alone,” and 808 Blake turned out the Nappy Roots/Jarren Benton song, “No Idea.” The low-key, low-fi production culminates with an introspective groove that weaves throughout tracks from Ab-Soul, Wiz Khalifa, Project Pat, Juicy J, the Weekend, and AarabMUZIK. But really, just cue up that Souls of Mischief and Snoop Dogg collab, “There Is Only Now,” and let it ride, over and over again. Who knew those two West Coast staples from different schools would form such a smooth aliance?

Mudfish will be behind the turntables at the Star Bar tonight (Thurs., July 10), with W.I.C., and if you haven’t hit it up yet, check out “Never Say Die.”

W.I.C., with Stranger Candy, Vera Vera, and Bearknuckle. Free. 9 p.m. (doors). Star Bar. 437 Moreland Ave. 404-681-9018. www.starbar.net.
