Sanctuary Park Tour: Celebrating 40 Years Of The Jayhawks at Variety Playhouse
CRITIC’S PICK
Thurs., Nov. 12
Jayhawks, Mary Gauthier, Variety Playhouse — The Minneapolis-bred Jayhawks didn’t invent Americana but their combination of ringing Byrds’ guitars, chiming country, and Midwestern roots pop helped bring it to a larger audience. Frontman Gary Louris led this outfit through a few breakups over the decades. Since 2016 they have been releasing albums nearly as impressive as their early classics. For this go-round, dubbed the Sanctuary Park Tour (after the title of their current release), you’ll get a two-hour helping of new and old tracks played with class and precision. Arrive early for folk singer Mary Gauthier, who usually headlines slightly smaller venues. She’ll bring socially aware politics and play tunes such as the searing “Judgment Day” from her urgent new Reckoning album. — Hal Horowitz
From the venue:
For more than forty years, The Jayhawks have created music that embodies the enduring spirit and soul of classic American songwriting. The Jayhawks emerged from Minneapolis in the post-punk era of The Replacements, Hüsker Dü and Soul Asylum. They pioneered today’s Americana movement through a series of classic albums that introduced rock audiences to their unique musical stew of country, folk, soul, Britpop and rock 'n' roll. The band has played most every major music festival, from Farm Aid to Primavera Sound, Pinkpop to Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky. In the tradition of The Band and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Jayhawks have toured with and served as backup band for many of music’s most acclaimed visionaries, including Ray Davies, Roger McGuinn, and Johnny Cash. Today, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Karen Grotberg and Tim O’Reagan continue to record and tour worldwide. Over 12 studio albums and three live albums, The Jayhawks are still building a legacy of music that stands the test of time. The band once again teamed up with legendary producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed) to create their upcoming album entitled Sanctuary Park, set to be released late summer 2026.Sanctuary Park Tour: Celebrating 40 Years Of ... | 11/12/2026 8:00 PM
