Down syndrome al-Qaeda bomber story false

Posted by Andisheh Nouraee on Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 4:06 PM

The U.S. and Iraqi governments claimed the Feb. 1 suicide bombing of a Baghdad pet market was carried out by two women with Down syndrome duped by al-Qaeda into carrying the bombs.

Subsequent reporting has uncovered that, other than the fact that the women didn't have Down syndrome or any evident ties to al-Qaeda, the governments' claims were spot-on.

Remember, these are the same people who keep telling you the surge is working.

"any evident ties to al-Qaeda" aside from the whoe suicide bomber in iraq thing, which generally leads one to suspect that they may have some ties to al qaeda in mesopotamia, a foreign-led terrorist organization which the new york times claims is a homegrown sunni extremist group.

AQI's has indeed been responsible for horrible attacks in Iraq. However, there has been a systematic effort by the White House to exaggerate AQI's strength as well as to conflate AQI with Bin Laden. "Vaguely al Qaeda-like" and "Al-Qaeda" are two separate things. And please give me a link to a New York Times story about AQI's roots that does not acknowledge the group's foreign-born operatives, or the late Abu Musab Zarqawi's Jordanian birth. I'd be curious to see it.
