Gravy Train: Big Apple Inn coming to Atlanta, new life for The Castle

Mississippi favorite Big Apple Inn is opening an Atlanta location. April Patton, granddaughter of the restaurant’s founder, is heading up the Atlanta branch after being inspired by a trial run at Atlanta Underground Market last spring. The Atlanta restaurant will stay true to the classics of the original location - serving tamales and pig ear sandwiches (While pig ears may scare some, April assures me that you "grow into it."). They'll also put their own twist on things, adding new items to the menu like more tamale options, coffee, and ice cream. The restaurant is planning to open this February in Westview, where they hope to take an active role in revitalizing the neighborhood. "My grandfather taught me that you have to be a part of a community, not just be in it," said April.

Previously just a rumor, permits with plans describing a restaurant and hotel space have now been filed for The Castle, a historic building in Midtown that sits right on 15th Street overlooking Woodruff Arts Center. The plans indicate there will be a four-unit hotel and a dining space. According to building permits, in addition to revamping the current building, a new space will be added to the back side of the building to make room for the restaurant and hotel lounge.

A new sports lounge and seafood grill called Fins is coming to the corner of 12th and Crescent in Midtown. The restaurant will have an outdoor patio and a lower level ultra lounge. They’ll serve up (duh) seafood and the bar plans offer a craft beer selection, small batch whiskeys, and other drunken delights.

Foodie Buddha details plans for menu changes at Miso Izakaya, courtesy of unnamed but apparently reliable sources. The popular Edgewood restaurant reportedly plans to branch out and try more adventurous dishes - including seasonal menus and ramped up sushi offerings - but they’re going to keep some old favorites around, too.

Sun in my Belly, having tested the waters with their weekly supper clubs, is now launching nightly dinner (Tuesday - Sunday). They’ll be BYOB and will still have a weekly four-course Supper Club menu available, in addition to a la carte offerings. Check out their full menu.

What Now Atlanta reports on upcoming changes at The Georgian Terrace. They plan to add a new, more casual bar area, slated to open in late Spring.

Our favorite Angry Chef will be heading up to NYC to cook at the James Beard House in February. True to form, Eyester is creating a musically-themed menu celebrating the anniversary of The Beatles’ February 16, 1964 appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

A new local food business called Southern Culture Artisan Foods has popped up. Their first product, appearing at farmer's markets this season, will be specialty pancake mixes. Flavors so far include Vanilla and Bourbon Salted Pecan. Owner Erica also plans to roll out other products - all with a local and organic focus.

Park Bar is opening near Centennial Park, in the former SaBor location. Expect bar games, burgers, and local beers. Check out the building’s facelift on Facebook.

Just in time to ruin your New Year’s resolution... Girl Scout cookie season is here. This year, fans will have a new choice: Savannah Smiles. They’re bite-size lemon cookies dusted with powdered sugar.

SweetWater announced that this year they’ll retire Sch’wheat in order to make room for new brews including a new year-round offering called LowRYEder and a 420 IPA remix. They also promise three Dank Tank limited releases in 2012 and will make Exodus Porter available on tap and in six packs.

In more booze news, Bourbon Bar, the bar at Southern Art, has introduced their very own bourbon - available exclusively at the Buckhead bar. Four Roses single barrel “Bourbon Bar Private Label” is described as having aromas of maple, dark cocoa, and light ash, and flavors of dark, ripe fruits such as cherries, plums and figs. Happy sipping.
